Jersey City Census 2020

US Census

The next Census is just around the corner.  In the spring of 2020, all U.S. residents will participate in a nationwide count. The Census greatly impacts the City of Jersey City as we rely on an accurate count to ensure we have appropriate funding and programming to meet the needs of our residents. If you would like to stay up to date and get involved with Jersey City’s effort to get an accurate Census count, visit: https://goo.gl/forms/gfuaBPnHvVT2rqAj2.

The Census is crucially important as it dictates the number of representatives each state has in the House of Representatives.  It defines Congressional and State Legislative districts.  It defines voting precincts.  It defines school districts.  It determines how much money municipalities receive in federal funding.  It helps governments, businesses, and community organizations better serve the community.

We know it is important to you that your information is secure. Title 13 protects Census data - personal information collected by the Census Bureau can never be published, cannot be used (against you?) in court, and cannot be used by any government agency outside of the Census Bureau. Census workers are sworn to protect the confidentiality of census data for life. Violations of Title 13 are punishable by five years in prison and/or a fine of $250,000.

The City of Jersey City is asking all residents to participate in the 2020 Census because an accurate Census in Jersey City will allow us to better serve you – our residents. You will be able to complete the Census online, by phone, or by mail. For your convenience, the Census Bureau will be offering assistance in 59 languages. We are asking that all residents fully report the number of people living in their dwelling, as a full and accurate count is crucial to ensuring that we appropriately equip our schools, parks, roads, and mass transit.
