The Division of Senior Affairs provides many services and programs for all senior residents in Jersey City.
Information and Assistance
The Division of Senior Affairs provides information and assistance to seniors, helping them to obtain services they need. This includes housing, PAAD, Lifeline, HAAAD, Home Delivered Meals, HEAP, Social Services, Transportation, and social recreational opportunities, events, and activities. Seniors can call with any question and obtain applications, information and assistance.
The Division of Senior Affairs offers free movies to Jersey City’s senior citizens on the first Tuesday of every month. There is a choice of one of four new movies at the Newport Theater. Transportation is available from various locations throughout the City. The movies are usually attended by about 400 senior citizens each month.
Buses for Shopping
The Division of Senior Affairs has two buses available for taking senior citizens shopping. These trips are made on a regular schedule; twice a month from 50 different locations to one of the larger supermarkets. The Division of Senior Affairs provides 100 trips for shopping each month.
Based on availability, buses are also available to take organized senior groups on local outings to places such as restaurants, shows, and educational sites. Please call Carol Pasquale at 201-547-4361 for more information on transportation.
State Senior Citizens Farmers' Market Vouchers
The Division of Senior Affairs distributes State Senior Citizens Farmer’s Market vouchers to lower income seniors. Be advised that the Division only receives a limited number of vouchers and works to distribute them fairly throughout the community. The Division has worked with the State to obtain additional vouchers which are not being used in other Counties. For the 2008 Farmers' Market season, the Division distributed 4500 vouchers spent at the Farmers' Markets at Journal Square and the other locations around Jersey City.
Health Fairs, Health Screenings, and Flu Shots
An annual Health Fair is held in the fall at the Hudson Mall on Route 440. There are many health screenings and the senior receive free flu shots. We generally serve about 400 to 500 senior citizens who take advantage of available health screenings and flu shots. at this fair. Other locations for Flu shots for seniors include City Hall, the Joseph Connors Senior Center, the Maureen Collier Senior Center, Berry Gardens Senior Housing, and Grace Seniors.
Senior Citizen Centers
The Division of Senior Affairs operates two Senior Citizen Centers, the Joseph Connors Senior Center, at 28 Paterson Street, (201-420-8249), and the Maureen Collier Senior Center, at 335 Bergen Avenue, (201-434-3794). Both Centers are operated as part of the City's Senior Program and are open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offer lunch, recreational, educational, and cultural activities to Jersey City senior residents (60+ years of age). For schedules of activities, please call each Center directly. Staff at both Centers are also available to help provide seniors with any information or assistance they might need.
The City, through our Nutrition Grant programs, operates an additional seven Senior Citizen Nutrition sites from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. weekdays. These sites, plus the two Senior Citizen Centers listed above, serve about 240 meals a day to seniors, five days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Home Delivered Meals
Our Home Delivered Meals Program serves between 800 and 1000 housebound seniors daily, including weekends, for a total of over 250,000 meals served each year. For more information, contact Jerome Colwell, Project Coordinator, at (201) 547-6808 or (201) 547-6809.
Outreach to Senior Organizations
The Senior Affairs staff maintains contact with 80 senior citizen organizations who meet within Jersey City. The Division helps these organizations plan their individual events and programs as well as provides transportation for trips, speakers for meetings, and information on other senior citizen issues or programs and citywide activities and events.
The Division of Senior Affairs also prints and distributes a senior citizen services directory which is updated annually.
