In-Person Sessions Remain Suspended
to Mitigate Public Exposure to COVID-19 

To help minimize foot traffic at the courthouse during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jersey City Municipal Court will hear scheduled appearances in virtual court sessions using Zoom video conferencing.  Beginning June 22, 2020, all sessions will resume virtually for scheduled court cases, with limited exceptions.  For matters with a mandatory court appearance, individuals will receive a notice in the mail with court date information.

If you have received a court notice for a virtual hearing and need information to join, please review the Courtroom Zoom Directory with instructionsPrior to the court date, court users are directed to watch the New Jersey Municipal Court Opening Statement.  The link for the video can be accessed through New Jersey Court's website under The Municipal Courts of New Jersey-Opening Statements section.   

NEW Online Municipal Case Resolution- No Court Appearance Required!

Jersey City now offers online ticket review to dispute certain moving violations through the Online Municipal Case Resolution System.  By having a moving violation reviewed online, it is not necessary to make any court appearance.  Simply visit and enter your ticket information to see if your offense is eligible, and select the option for Case Dispute. Eligible traffic tickets will be reviewed by a prosecutor and you will be notified with their recommendation.  To see if you are eligible to have your matter reviewed online, please visit

If your matter is not eligible for online ticket review, you can still request to have certain tickets heard in the Jersey City Virtual Municipal Court.  Scheduled virtual court matters are heard using Zoom video conferencing, and you will receive a notice and instructions on how to appear.  To plead not guilty and register for the virtual court, please complete the Plea of Not Guilty form

Defendants may make payments for Municipal Complaint Time Payment Orders, in addition to parking and traffic matters, through the municipal court’s online payment website at
Payments will also continue to be accepted at the court payment window or by mail.

Window attendant at Municipal Court.According to the State of NJ Judiciary website, "the Municipal Courts in New Jersey are considered courts of limited jurisdiction, having responsibility for motor vehicle and parking tickets, minor criminal-type offenses, municipal ordinance offenses, and other offenses.  A Municipal Court usually has jurisdiction only over cases that occur within the boundaries of its municipality.

"Serious criminal cases, such as robbery, auto theft, or assault, may start out as complaints filed in the Municipal Court but are transferred to the Superior Court located at the county courthouse."
