FAQ: Residential Parking Permit Renewals

Why is automatic renewal not permitted?
To ensure the integrity of our parking program, the city requires a manual review of all renewal requests. Staff must confirm the current validity of both the driver’s license and vehicle registration before any approval is granted.

Requirements for Approval:

  • Driver's License: Must be valid and reflect your current residential address.
  • Vehicle Registration: Must be valid and up to date.

This manual verification serves as a necessary safeguard for the city, preventing the liability risks associated with outdated or inaccurate information.

Note: To assist residents with this requirement, automated email notifications are sent to permit holders prior to their expiration date with instructions on how to re-certify.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT

Meters

The Jersey City Division of Parking oversees parking spaces and lots, manages street cleaning, issues tickets for violations, and provides parking permits.
Resident parking permits are required for parking for more than 2 hours in many areas. Posted signs will indicate a need for a parking permit, parking restrictions for street cleaning, and other limitations for street parking. Parking meters are also placed in certain high-traffic business districts.

PLEASE NOTE: When parking regulations are suspended, that means street cleaning, residential zone parking, and meter rules will not be enforced that day. Anytime parking regulations are suspended, drivers are still not permitted to park illegally (i.e., blocking fire hydrants, off corners, etc.) and will be ticketed accordingly.   Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our roadways safe.

PLEASE NOTE:
Due to restrictions in the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission database, Parking Enforcement Officers are unable to tow vehicles after 10pm.
All other calls for service will be answered until 11:30 pm Monday - Saturday. Residents in need of assistance after 11:30 pm should call the Jersey City Police non-emergency line at 201-547-5477.
Regular Parking Enforcement services resume at 6 am daily.
