***TENANT RIGHTS DURING THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY***

In response to the current Public Health Emergency the City Council unanimously passed Ord. No. 20-036 which prohibits any rent increase and any penalty for late rent payments until August 1, 2020 in all rent controlled and non-owner occupied 1-4 unit dwellings. Ord. No. 20-306 - Rent Increase Freeze


Enforcement in all evictions and foreclosures is stayed. There will be no lock-outs* during the State of Emergency and continuing for no more than two months from the end of the Public Health Emergency or the State of Emergency, whichever is later. This notice will be updated if these dates are modified.

*Except on court order in the interest of justice.

 The Office of Landlord Tenant Relations administers and enforces the Rent Control Ordinance, Chapter 260 of the Jersey City Municipal Code and provides education, information and referrals to city residents in connection with landlord/tenant issues.
