DIVISION OF FIRE

 Fire house

Organized fire protection in Jersey City began on September 21, 1829. In 1871, the volunteer Jersey City Fire Department consolidated with the Hudson City and City of Bergen volunteer departments to officially form the professional career department that serves the city today.

The Jersey City Division of Fire now includes approximately 680 uniformed firefighters and 50 civilian personnel. This represents the Department’s largest staffing level in more than 25 years, and makes it the largest of the over 600 municipal departments throughout New Jersey!

Last year alone, the Department responded to more than 13,000 calls for service. Every member is trained as a first responder, and every frontline vehicle is equipped with an automatic external defibrillator to ensure immediate life-saving capability upon arrival.

The City’s commitment to strengthening fire protection has never been stronger.  Today, we have 28 companies on duty every day, with each apparatus staffed by a minimum of one officer and three firefighters. This is the highest daily company staffing level in more than 25 years and reflects a sustained investment in operational readiness, rapid response, and the safety of Jersey City residents.
