JERSEY CITY, NJ — Mayor Steven M. Fulop announces the appointment of Police Officer Melissa Mendola as the new LGBTQ Liaison for the Jersey City Police Department. In her new role, Officer Mendola, a dedicated member of the department’s Field Training Unit, will serve as a vital bridge between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community, advocating for inclusivity, education, and building trust within the Jersey City community.
“As a city that celebrates diversity and inclusivity, I am confident that Officer Mendola’s dedication and leadership will not only strengthen the critical relations between the LGBTQ+ community and our police department but also ensure that Jersey City continues to set a standard for equity and respect in public safety,” said Mayor Fulop.
A core aspect of Officer Mendola’s work focuses on addressing and educating about bias incidents. “My role is to shed light on these situations, ensuring they are properly identified and handled appropriately from the initial response to post-incident follow-ups. This role gives me the unique opportunity to work closely with newer officers, equipping them with knowledge and training about policies specific to the LGBTQ+ community. I look forward to being a resource, a voice, and an ally for years to come.”
Among the liaison’s many duties, she will attend state, county, and city meetings to develop innovative ideas, training programs, and community events. Her work aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment for Jersey City’s diverse residents.
“I have no doubt that Melissa will bring her energy and empathy to this position and make a meaningful difference in strengthening the bonds between the police department and the diverse communities we serve,” said Police Director Tawana Moody.
In addition to her liaison responsibilities, Officer Mendola serves as a Resiliency Program Officer, providing 24/7 support to her fellow officers. Whether assisting with personal or professional challenges, she bridges gaps and connects colleagues with the necessary resources, exemplifying her dedication to both the community and her peers.
The Jersey City Police Department remains committed to enhancing community relations and fostering an inclusive environment for all residents. Officer Melissa Mendola’s appointment marks an important step in these ongoing efforts.
In her four years of service, Officer Mendola’s role within the Field Training Unit positions her to impact the next generation of officers. “Within the first six months of their careers, I will train new officers on the importance of recognizing and respecting the LGBTQ+ community as a protected class. This is critical to ensuring our community feels comfortable and confident in our responses,” she explained.
