The Division of Community Health & Wellness serves as the chief Health Strategist for Jersey City. In response to the diverse and ever-growing needs of the city, where over 70 languages are spoken, the division utilizes public health data to drive its education efforts. In its mission to create a city where residents are healthy, well and thriving, multilingual health educators are assigned to address the city's most emerging health needs. Data has shown that in Wards A & F the most urgent health priorities are mental health and violence. Health educators have now shifted their focus and resources to align with those health needs. Building and strengthening community partnerships and data-informed health strategies result in creating a stronger, healthier Jersey City.

The History of National HIV Testing Day

National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) was first observed on June 27, 1995. It was created by the National Association of People with AIDS to encourage HIV testing and raise awareness about the importance of knowing one's status. The initiative was launched at a time when HIV testing was becoming more accessible, but stigma and misinformation still posed significant barriers.

Early tests were not designed for individual diagnosis but rather to ensure the safety of the blood supply. Over time, advancements in testing technology and public health campaigns helped shift the focus toward personal health and prevention.

Today, National HIV Testing Day continues to play a crucial role in promoting early detection, access to treatment, and prevention. The theme for 2024 was "Level up your self-love: check your status", emphasizing self-care and health awareness. This year we’re encouraging everyone to make HIV Testing a priority. Get tested not just for yourself, but for your friends, partners and family- show them you care.
