Jersey City has been the backdrop for hundreds of feature films, series and commercials. FilmJC works with locations personnel to assure your shoot goes smoothly. To do that, we request that you read the FAQ, so you understand how we balance the needs of the production with those of the community.

TYPES OF PERMITS

MINOR PERMIT

Non-commercial still shoots, web series and short films.

  • 4 -15 total cast and crew
  • 2 or fewer cameras on tripod, handheld, gimbal or steady cam
  • No jibs or cranes
  • No special effects
  • No dollys, grip stands, lighting or reflectors on stands on any public right of way (street, sidewalk, park, etc)
  • No ITC or street closure
  • No off duty officers
  • Permitted parking for three or fewer 18' production vehicles

MINOR FILM PERMIT FEES

$100 non-refundable application fee payable one time per calendar year
$250 per day

INTERMEDIATE PERMIT

All commercial still and smaller film shoots, web series, Indie films, short films.

  • Total cast/crew 16-25
  • Total of 5 -18' parking spaces permitted
  • No ITC, or street closure
  • No special effects
  • A pre-production meeting may be required

INTERMEDIATE FILM PERMIT FEES

$200 non-refundable application fee payable one time per calendar year
$1000 per day


MAJOR PERMIT

Major motion pictures, commercials or series, whether for web, streaming, broadcast or theatrical release.

  • A pre-production meeting is required
  • If ITC, street closure or off duty police are needed,  parking, ITC, or street closure plan must be submitted at least fifteen (15) days prior to shoot day
  • Set up and wrap days will be charged as shoot days; adjustments will be made if the film footprint is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller

MAJOR FILM PERMIT FEES

$300 non-refundable application fee payable one time per calendar year
$1500 per day


NO PERMIT

No permit is required for productions with 3 or fewer cast and crew, or credentialed press photographers and videographers unless: 

  • Production requires ITC, street closure, or blocks the pedestrian Right of Way (sidewalk)
  • Actors are costumed in public safety or first responder uniforms
  • Uses prop firearms, special effects using flames

LIMITATIONS

  • Hand-held equipment, or
  • No more than 2 cameras on tripods that don't obstruct pedestrian or vehicular traffic
  • No dollys, generators, jibs, cranes
  • No lighting or audio stands (reflectors held by crew are permitted)
  • No reserved parking permits
STUDENT FILMS

Student films are those made in by students attending accredited institutions of higher learning. Student's email must be a school email. The school is considered the "producer" on the COI and the name on the application must match the producer name.

To apply for a student film permit:

  • Proof that the film is part of an accredited school curriculum must be submitted
  • Student films require a COI only through the school's insurance policy. Check with your school's risk management department for how to obtain an insurance certificate. The COI through your school can take up to several weeks to receive. See Insurance for COI details.
  • No reserved parking
  • No street closure, or ITC

Van Vorst neighborhood, including Van Vorst Park and the Journal Sq are current hotspots. Check the map below and please contact us if you want to shoot in the areas in these neighborhoods.
