Monticello Avenue Safety Improvements

Residents have raised concerns about vehicle speeding and pedestrian safety along Monticello Avenue. This corridor has experienced a high number of crashes, including incidents resulting in injuries and one fatality. In response, a pop-up traffic safety demonstration was installed between Fairmount Avenue and Fairview Avenue in Spring 2024 to slow traffic and improve overall safety.

The Jersey City Department of Infrastructure has proposed additional safety improvements along Monticello Avenue between Harrison Avenue and Fairview Avenue to further enhance safety for all users, calm traffic speeds, simplify complex intersections, and provide improved cycling facilities in alignment with the City's Vision Zero Action Plan. This next phase of improvements will build upon successful safety measures on the north end of the corridor in advance of a capital construction project along Monticello Avenue funded by an NJDOT Municipal Aid grant anticipated to begin design in late 2025.

The proposed short-term improvements include:

  • Curb extensions at Jewett Avenue, Gardner Avenue, Belmont Avenue, Astor Place, Emory Street, Brinkerhoff Street, and Harrison Avenue.

  • Pedestrian median islands at the intersections of Monticello Avenue and Brinkerhoff Street, Emory Street, and Astor Place.

  • Shared lane markings ("sharrows") along Monticello Avenue between Fairview Avenue and Communipaw Avenue.

  • Enhanced bus stop markings.

  • No Turn on Red restrictions at Fairview Avenue, Jewett Avenue, and Belmont Avenue.

  • Leading Pedestrian Intervals at Fairview Avenue, Jewett Avenue, and Belmont Avenue.

The project is expected to begin on or about the week of April 7, 2025. Minor traffic detours may be implemented during striping operations. Parking will be prohibited along portions of the corridor during the day, and emergency no-parking signage will be posted. Vehicles parked within the project area will be towed at the owner’s expense. The project is expected to be completed by the end of April 2025.
